Medical Care of Children

1 Jesintha Rayappan (12 years) was followed up at the ENT Clinic, University Hospital on 11th September 2007 at 10 am as she complained of excessive ear wax. Ear drops to soften the ear wax has been prescribed and Jesintha does not need a follow up appointment.

2. Tinesh a/l Ratnarajah ( 12 years ), was followed up on 9th October 2007, at the Skin Clinic, University Hospital, for his swollen feet.  The skin specialist said that the warts on      Tinesh’s left foot have improved.  He was treated with “cool burning” aerosol spray.  Tinesh has fortnightly appointments with the skin specialist. His next appointment with the Pediatric Clinic for Developmental Assessment will be on 23rd October, 2.00 pm.

3. Siva Kumar a/l Tannimalay had his vision tested at Perfect Vision Optical and spectacles prescribed.

4. Doris Lee Wan Yi was seen by Dr Carmel Celestine of Menara Dental Surgery for swollen, painful gums and toothache on 12th September 2007, 3 pm. She had scaling done.

5. Vinosha (8 years), was followed up at the Pediatric Clinic, University Hospital , on 13th September 2007, at 9 am.  The results for all blood tests are good. HIV, Thalassemia, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis and Cancer were all ruled out.  We thank and praise God.  Her next follow up appointment is on 22nd November at 9.00 am. 

6. Many children and wardens were treated at Clinic Kok for symptoms of vomiting, purging and fever. The symptoms have now stopped.

7. We have been informed that Shamala Ilango is on Medical Leave at Montfort Boys’ Home because of Conjunctivitis. Sister Rosalind of Montfort Girls’ Centre said that Shamala will resume her studies on 16th October 2007.    

Renovation

We sent a letter of request to Dato Arumugam, Managing Director of Johnson Suisse (M) Sdn. Bhd for donation of toilet fittings. On 5th October 2007, we received (20) toilet bowls, (10) wash basins with counter top and (8) normal wash basins, all free of charge from Johnson Suisse ( M) Sdn. Bhd.  Renovation to the boys’ dormitories, toilets and old office area is in progress. New latches and padlocks have been fixed to the kitchen cabinets. One (4) panel window in the event rooms has been closed up and another window in the events room has been converted into a sliding glass door.

   

Donation in Kind

1. Puan Sumitra Selvaraj donated fruits - watermelons, oranges, and limes on 20th August 2007.

2. On 20th August, Miss Jenny Goh, Monica Sim and James Leong donated 5 pillows, 7 bottles of            Horlicks, 3 bottles Ribena, 5 packets Milo , cooking oil, sardines , salt, sugar and organic barley.

3. Janssen- Cilag donated tissue boxes, toilet duck fluid, toilet rolls, soap powder, Dynamo, laundry fluid and sanitary pads on 25th August 2007.

4. An anonymous donor gave 100 packets of delicious dinner to celebrate Merdeka Day on 1st September 2007.

5. Victor of Doshis donated 2 rugs for our Events Room on 3rd September 2007.

6. On 8th September 2007, Ms Gomathy donated a hearty lunch.

7. Mr Vincent Choo donated 4 bottles of vitamin tablets on 12th September 2007. 

8. On 13th September 2007, Haagen –Dazs donated three 9.5- Litre tubs of Azuki Bean Bulkcan ice cream.

9. Datin Sue Elamaran donated a good dinner and cake. Nine prizes were given for winners of games that she organized with the help of our children, on Sunday 23rd   September evening.

10. On 25th September 2007, En Asmi donated Pizza for dinner time.

11. On 29th September, Miss Selvi donated dinner.

12. We receive a regular monthly supply of 20 copies of Kuntum Magazine from Star Newspapers.

Education

PMR -  Penilaian Menengah Rendah

Three of our children in Form 3, Matherlin, Tenmooly and Josephine Lee have sat for their PMR from 1st October 2007.  They attended tuition classes with Mr. Andrew Wong of Mesra Tuition Centre, Section 14 Petaling Jaya and Tutorial Nanda, Old Town Petaling Jaya.                       

SPM – Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia                                         

We have 1 child, Doris Lee Wan Yi, who will sit for her SPM in November 2007.  We have a volunteer from Bangsar Lutheran Church who gives tuition to Doris at 2.00 pm. every Saturday. Doris also receives tuition from Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Mathew.  

Events

  1. On Saturday 25th August, 10.00 am-12 Noon, some members of the Kiwanis Club of Bukit Bandaraya met with the K- Kids of Rumah Hope ( 38 children) for Recycling Collection of newspapers, aluminum cans, and plastic containers.  This fund raising community project was carried out to bring gifts to the elders in our community.

  1. On Saturday 8th    September 2007, 9.00 am – 2.00 pm ,30 children accompanied by warden Pancha  were invited by the Pergerakan  Puteri  Negeri  Selangor for  Sukaneka  and  lunch Transport was provided. 
  1. On Saturday 8th September 2007, at 7.00 pm, 9 children accompanied by warden Suren participated in the Mission Dinner at ELCM Zion Cathedral.
  1. On Sunday 9th September 2007, 11.00 am – 3.00 pm, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf invited 10 children and 1 warden for their 10th year Anniversary Birthday Bash at KL Plaza.  Our Chairman and his wife graced the occasion and were presented with a cheque for RM20, 000.00.  We are extremely grateful to Coffee Bean to this unexpected gesture.
  1. On Sunday 9th September 2007, at 2.00 pm, 20 children and 1 warden were invited for the Flute Festival in Malaysia at the KL Performing Arts Centre in Sentul Park , KL. These tickets were presented to us by J.C. Inspirations (M) Sdn Bhd.
  1. On Saturday 22nd September 2007, 9.00 am - 5.00 pm, 20 children were invited to participate in the project “I Care- 5 To 1 Education Sponsorship Programme” initiated by NetCousins with the objective to help the underprivileged students through education.  A total of 200 orphans or children of single parents are targeted to be sponsored under this project. 160 will be orphans and 40 will be reserved for single parents’ children.  Features like social skills, online tuition, forum, self development, study techniques, exam skills, and tutorial and success secrets in exam and study life will be shared. NetCousins focus on community empowerment and knowledge transfer.  Human potential and ability must not be spoon- fed, but should be inspired and empowered. The award winning E-Learning portal – www.netcousins.com has received numerous recognitions from the National Science Centre, Museum Negara, Hewlett Packard, The Age Business Weekly and Malaysian Government.
  1. On Saturday 15th September 2007,15 children accompanied by warden Suren participated in the Lantern Festival / dinner at 6.00 pm – 9.00 pm  at  Persatuan Agama Buddha ,Taman Gembira, KL.  We received a cheque for RM 500.00.
  1. On Saturday 15th, 22nd, 29th, Sunday 16th, 23rd, 30th September 2007, at 3.00 pm, 14 children participated in the Mid Autumn Carnival of Talents at the Millennium Square Commercial Complex in Section 14 Petaling Jaya.  We also participated in the Charity Bazaar selling handicraft for Rumah Hope. We received RM550.00 donation from Millennium Square .      
  1. The Prudential – Kiwanis children’s show rehearsals continue at the  Studio 2, The Academy, at  KL Performing  Arts Centre,   Sentul   Park from  2.00 pm – 4.00 pm for 12 Saturdays.  The     children will rehearse to perform a 30- minute play, “The Big Brown Mushroom” on 3rd-5th December 2007 at KL PAC. There will be two evening performances and one afternoon performance. Rumah Hope will be invited for the afternoon performance. The Kiwanis Club is paying the driver RM 40 for every session and RM20.00 to Rumah Hope for petrol. Our 4 male wardens take turns to drive the children.                 
  1. On 12th September 2007, 4.00 pm, Pastor went for a recording at Minnel FM to create awareness of Rumah Hope and our needs.  On 17th September 2007, Astro Vaanavil did a shooting and recording in Rumah Hope at 2.00 pm.  Mr. Jacob Mathew, Pastor and our children were interviewed.

  1. Majlis Penyampaian Bantuan Khas - Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Ahli Parlimen Kawasan Petaling Jaya Utara merangkap Setiausaha Parlimen Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga Dan Masyarakat organised a Berbuka Puasa Dinner at Kelana Jaya Seafood Centre, on 7th October 2007, at 6.00pm. 15 children and 1 warden participated. We received 15, RM10 angpows totalling RM150.00.    

  1. Invitation to Open House, YAB Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor - Rumah Hope Management Committee, Staff and all children have been invited on 13th October 2007, being the first day of Hari Raya, 9.00 am-3.00pm, for “Majlis Rumah Terbuka” at Kompleks Kebudayaan dan Belia Selangor, Shah Alam . One (44) seater MPPJ bus and one (10) seater van will pick us up at 11.00 am from Rumah Hope.

  1. Christmas Tree of Hope 2007 - Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur will be organising a charity initiative with the objective of fulfilling the Christmas wishes of underprivileged children. They have invited children from Rumah Hope to put forward their wishes in a specially designed Starry Wish Card. The launch of this initiative is scheduled in mid-December, at the Mandarin Oriental.    

Charity Bazaar

         Ms Omana Mathew sold handicraft items (Christmas decorations, handmade jewelry and handmade bags) for Rumah Hope at the Mid Autumn Carnival, Millennium Square Commercial Complex on 15th -16th September 2007,       3.00 pm to 10.00 pm.

           On Sunday 11th November 2007, 11.00 am- 3.00 pm we will participate in the  Japan  Charity Fiesta and  Bazaar  at Hotel Nikko, Jalan Ampang,  Kuala Lumpur, organized by the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur and the Japanese Women’s Association.  There will be 10 charity homes and   40 commercial vendors taking the organizer’s booths.

        We wrote a request to the British Women’s Association for a booth at their Charity Bazaar 2007. They have given us a booth at their Charity Christmas Bazaar “Winter Wonderland” on Sunday 4th November 2007, 11.00 am- 3.00pm in the Grand Ball Room, Nikko Hotel.  

       A letter has gone to the president of the American Association of Malaysia appealing for a booth at their Charity Bazaar 2007.

      We have written to Mrs. Gudrun Sassdender, of the Austrian – German Bazaar, 2007 also appealing for a booth.

       We have written to Ms Mary Malqueen of Alice Smith School requesting for a booth at their Charity Bazaar 2007.

Staff Training

  1. On the 3rd - 4th of September 2007, two wardens participated in Strategic Forum Expertise which was a powerful, persuasive and practical course on becoming effective and result oriented. Some course objectives were:-
    1. To identify your current work style and personality  
    2. To uncover your current mental blueprint and mind set.
    3. To identify and eliminate limiting beliefs that holds you back.
    4. To set new inspiring and empowering goals.
    5. To learn new, effective ways to get things done at the work place.
    6. To learn to manifest what you want with elegance and grace.
    7. To master the technique to change, mind mastery and install winning programs.
    8. The two wardens shared their learning experiences with the rest of the wardens at the Wardens’ Meeting.              
  1. On Saturday 1st September 2007, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm, Nesh attended a free training programme (Microsoft Excel 2003) at the Stamford College , Petalin Jaya, Jalan Barat.   Stamford College offers free training courses on a bimonthly basis to any registered NGO in the country, as part of i Train’s corporate social responsibilities. We will be informed regarding future intermediate and advanced training programs.

  1. Every Wednesday morning, Berhane Begashaw attends free English Language Classes in Cheras, arranged by UNHCR.

New Duty Roster

With effect from Monday 17th September 2007, 3 wardens will be on morning shift, 5.00 am- 2.00 pm

and 4 wardens will be on afternoon shift 2.00 pm – 11.00 pm and 1 warden will have a day off on each day of the week.  On Saturdays and Sundays, 2 male wardens will be on afternoon duty to ensure availability of drivers.   On public holidays, school holidays and weekends there will be two shifts- 7.00 am – 3.00 pm and 3.00 pm – 11.00 pm.  On Monday- Friday there will be 2 shifts 5.00 am- 2.00 pm

and 2.00 pm – 11.00 pm . Daily break time will be at 10.00 am -11.00am and 11.00 am- 12 noon ( 1 hr)

for the morning shift, 4.30 pm – 5.30 pm and 7.00pm – 8.00 pm ( 1hr) for the afternoon shift. Two wardens will take 1 break time.   One male and 1 female warden on morning duty will sleep overnight with the children.  We have received positive comments on the new roster from the wardens.

Funding

Grant for Renovation/Repairs

We have submitted our application to Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Malaysia , Daerah Petaling, on 5th October 2007, for a grant for our renovation works. We have attached the quotations from BeauArt Enterprise and Mesra Bersaama. Puan Azlina of Daerah Petaling has been helpful and supportive of our application.   

Government Grant for year 2008

We have submitted our application to Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Negeri, Shah Alam, for our next Government Grant. Puan Sunarni Mastury from the office of Pengarah Kebajikan Masyarakat Negeri Selangor has been very supportive of our application.
